I have been using Gimp for sometime, previously under Windows and now under Ubuntu. However, under Ubuntu it seems the default is to place the toolbox on top of the main Gimp window. This can be annoying, so here is a way to turn off this “feature”.
With Gimp open, From the Edit menu, select Preferences. Click the black arrow in front of Input Devices on the left to show the items under it. Click Window Management. In the Window Management section you’ll find “Window Manager Hints.”
Under Window Manager Hints change both the hint for the toolbox and other docks to “Nomal Window” and click OK.
Note: You will be prompted you will need to restart Gimp in order for the changes to take affect. Click OK.
Restart Gimp and the Toolbox will now be hideable behind the main window.
